The word processing program can be very simple one, but we recommend an up-to-date version or a well known, industry compatible program such as WordPerfect or WordStar.

Your printer can be a daisy wheel if you do not need graphics (illustrations) or much type or style variety. It can be a 24 pin dot matrix for high quality printing AND graphics. An inexpensive 9 pin dot matrix will suffice for minor jobs, but not for major contract work, where “letter quality” is desired.

The top of the line printer, a laser jet would be nice — but they are quite expensive.

Your working area is very important, especially if there are any type of interruptions (children head this list). You need a place that is dedicated to your business — where nothing else takes place except business.

Ideally, it should be a separate room (soundproof?), with a locking door and an outside entrance, which will allow clients to enter your office without going through the house on the way to your office.

Prepare final documents from typed, hand-written or taped drafts, such as student term papers, business letters, legal briefs, manuscripts, resume’s and institution reports.

Much of the work in the pure business of finalizing documents can be accomplished on a typewriter, especially a good one – with changeable type, error removal and/or a memory.

A typewriter, however, really limits the amount and variety of jobs that can be performed, so it is STRONGLY recommended that anyone contemplating this type of business skip the typewriter stage and go directly to a word processor.

A word processing system can be purchased for little more than a modem, self typewriter with a memory — but it does a thousand times more! If you want work at home and start with a typewriter, we suggest you use the one you have or get a used one ( an old IBm for example) – and not invest any more than absolutely necessary in it.

Because if your business is to grow, you will sooner or later change to a word processor. Although the rest of this material is directed to word processing, the same principles apply to typing – only it’s a lot more work on a typewriter.

The basic requirements for a word processing business are a computer with a word processing program, a letter quality printer and a dedicated working area.

The computer should be IBM compatible — the particular brand is not important, so long as it is 100% IBM compatible and you can get a decent service and assistance locally.

According to recent estimates by business consulting firms offering this market has grown from roughly 3 million in annual sales in 1985 to almost 3 billion in 1991, and there is no end in sight. One of the real opportunities and challenges of this computer based business is the fact that there are still millions of clients out there that as yet do not even know that they need the services of a desktop publishing service.

Desktop publishers use computers, and need computer based training laser printers and sophisticated software program in the preparation of high quality graphic material. The price of the equipment used is continuing to come down dramatically, therefore the start-up estimates may be high. The quality of graphic material which can be produced in this manner is so high that only a professional can detect the difference between material designed by desktop publishing and material which has been typeset. The latter has a somewhat higher resolution which is not noticeable to the naked eye. Much of the material you see in newspapers such as USA Today and magazines was prepared through someone who had computer training in desktop publishing.

How To Start A Profitable Home-Based Business

Most of these part-time endeavors are started and operated from the comfort and privacy of the home.

Most of these people are making the extra money they need. Some have wisely and carefully built these extra income efforts into full-time, very profitable businesses. Others are just keeping busy, having fun, and enjoying life as never before. The important thing is that they are doing something other than waiting for the government to give them a handout; they are improving their lot in life, and you can do it, too!

Computer Training

Learning Basic Computer Skills on your own can be very difficult, especially if you not accustom to using computers. People spend months or even years, just to learn How to Use A Computer.

Monitor

Monitors for home computers are available in 17″, 19″ or 21″ sizes with price increasing with size. Most entry-level computers come with 17″ screens, whilst higher end models will use the larger sizes. Computer screens are all much higher resolution than a TV. A bigger screen will display a bigger picture, and combined with the right graphics card can also display more information on the screen at a time. Flat screen monitors are also very popular, yet expensive. You can search on Google for the Monitor you want.

The technical specifications relating to screens cover things like refresh rates (e.g. 75MHz, the bigger the better) and dot pitch (i.e. the size of dots, the smaller the better). Rather than get involved in working out different specifications, take a hard look at a demonstration screen. Is it flickering, or are the letters on screen fuzzy compared to a more expensive model? If so, it is likely to cause you problems later on if you have to spend a long time in front of it.
